Hempstead Lake State Park

The 775-acre Hempstead Lake State Park in West Hempstead, Long Island is home to the largest lake in Nassau County namely Hempstead Lake. There is a parking lot available near the trailhead on Lakeview Avenue which provides easy access to explore this scenic park. Also, there is another trail at the south end of Hempstead Lake State Park in East Meadow off Brook Avenue and Hempstead Turnpike where you can explore the woodlands and wetlands through trails perfect for hiking and bird watching.

On the lake, you can fish and kayak and feel like you are a world away from the hustle and bustle of city life. You need a fishing license to fish in Hempstead Lake State Park. There are fishing piers available along the lake for fishing enthusiasts throughout the park’s shoreline, where fishing is allowed at designated fishing areas only. The boat launch provides access to small boats, canoes or kayaks to explore the waters surrounding Hempstead Lake State Park.

The park has playgrounds, a charming and historic wooden carved merry-go-round that opens on weekends and holidays through Columbus Day.
