West Hempstead Public Library

West Hempstead Public Library is a public library located in the hamlet of West Hempstead, New York. The library was founded in 1923. The library has four departments: adult services, children’s services, circulation services and reference services. Its collection consists of more than 52,000 items including DVDs, audiobooks on CD and cassette tapes, music CDs and vinyl records. The library serves approximately 42,000 patrons each year with its two branches that are open at least 50 hours each week.

The library is also home to several special collections. These include traditional Chinese collections, tax materials for Nassau County residents, major African-American authors, and Haitian culture. The library hosts lecture several times a month on various cultural topics. They also host book discussion groups every month which anyone can join. Patrons are able to use the meeting rooms for free meetings or appointments. Patrons with children are able to access the West Hempstead Library Children’s Room where they can read books or use age-appropriate technology like iPads, Leapsters and video games.

There is also an area dedicated to teens where they can meet up for game nights or see what new activities will be happening at the library that month. People who want to get involved can become library supporters and participate in various fundraising activities or they can volunteer for library events.

The library offers a variety of programs for children, teens and adults during the week. For example, on Monday there’s storytime with crafts time for kids on Tuesdays. On Wednesday sign language is taught at 4:30 PM at the West Hempstead branch and every first Saturday of the month from 2 PM to 3 PM kids can have fun playing games on iPads. They also have interesting classes where people can learn things like quilting or cooking. People looking to meet friends can join some of their book clubs that are each designed for a specific kind of reader.

There is a book club for mystery readers, romance lovers and science fiction fans. Other events at the library include special holiday activities as well as educational programs that are open to all members of the community. For example, they have nature walks where people learn about local wildlife and various birding courses which teach them how to identify birds by their songs. The building itself was built in 1981 but renovated just recently so everything inside looks great and is up-to-date with today’s electronics.

The West Hempstead Public Library is a great place to go to either check out materials or try out their many free activities. People looking to volunteer or donate materials will find the library more than happy to take donations during business hours of operation.
